Boy Received Surgery on Deformed Skull

Liu Jing before and after surgery to reconstruct his deformed skull at a hospital in Xiamen, East China's Fujian Province. Nine-year-old Liu Jing, who suffered from hydrocephalus at birth and later the deformed skull, received the 13-hour operation on July 15, 2007.

Hydrocephalus is a rare condition also known as water on the brain. It results from an excessive build up of cerebrospinal fluid, a watery substance which surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The surplus fluid collects in cavities in the brain, generally resulting in an abnormally enlarged head. The condition usually develops after birth, but is also known to affect the unborn child, in which case a Caesarean section is needed to deliver the baby.
